Uni products are made with many natural ingredients. However, there are some natural ingredients that are irritating to the skin. Some natural ingredients are not ethically sourced. There are many bio-based actives that leverage nature but in a controlled lab setting. In relevant cases, we selected a skin-safe, ethically sourced synthetic ingredient over a natural ingredient.
Yes, all Uni products are reef-safe. The bodycare you apply may not stay on your skin. When we swim or shower, chemicals may wash off and enter our waterways. Chemicals impact marine life. For coral reefs, it accumulates in tissues and can induce bleaching, damage DNA, deform young, and even kill. Uni products are made exclusively with reef-safe ingredients, as determined by the HEL (Haereticus Environmental Laboratory) list. Uni is certified reef friendly by Biorius.
Uni uses many certified organic ingredients but is not completely organic. Please refer to our ingredient list to see which ingredients are certified organic. Some brands can leverage this to refer to themselves as organic. However, we value transparency above all.
Yes, all Uni products are vegan.
Yes, all Uni products are gluten free.
All Uni products are safe for women who are pregnant or nursing. However, we recommend consulting with your doctor before using any new products while pregnant or nursing.
Uni’s high-performance marine actives work to keep your skin in a hydrated, healthy and balanced state. Our “no” list is comprehensive and extensive to ensure that we included only skin-safe ingredients, even beyond the ubiquitous checklists. Additionally, our formulations were created with a pH balanced approach to avoid skin inflammation and concerns. Note that we do include planet-safe natural fragrances. If you have any allergies or pre-existing skin issues, we recommend doing a patch test before applying to your whole body.
Climate Neutral
Uni works diligently to reduce the overall carbon footprint of our company through a range of practices. We source renewable energy, formulate products with sustainable and upcycled ingredients, and eliminate single-use plastic in our packaging. Additionally, Uni’s Recyclable Refill is made from 100% recycled aluminum, can be refilled 100x, and is 100% recyclable.
Once energy conservation and emission reduction strategies are exhausted, emissions that cannot be further reduced or eliminated are tracked, measured, and compensated for via a diverse portfolio of verified carbon offset projects. By supporting these projects, we are able to compensate for 100% of remaining emissions.
Our carbon footprint analysis and final calculations adhere to the methodology outlined by the World Resources Institute Greenhouse Gas Protocol. The operational boundaries for our footprint (i.e. what is included in our calculations) includes the following emissions sources:
Scope 1 (direct): Direct emissions produced by the burning of fuels.
Scope 2 (indirect): Electricity and natural gas consumed and purchased.
Scope 3 (other indirect): Business travel, staff commuting, landfill waste, package shipments, and product manufacturing.
Since our founding, we have been committed to environmental stewardship and responsibility. We have tracked and compensated for our emissions from Day 1 of our operations. We will continue to do this every year moving forward.
By tracking our footprint on an annual basis, we will be able to pinpoint our largest emission sources as well as identify opportunities to minimize our footprint. We will also be able to compensate for the emissions that we cannot avoid via the purchase of mission-aligned carbon offsets.
Across the globe, there are internationally-verified projects that serve to reduce carbon emissions from the atmosphere, ranging from deforestation initiatives to the construction of wind farms. A carbon offset is a tradeable certificate that represents the avoidance or removal of one tonne of carbon emissions by one of these projects. Carbon offsets may be purchased by individuals or organizations who want to support these environmentally-beneficial projects, and in doing so, compensate for their own emissions.
Uni supports a diverse portfolio of carbon offset projects that meet the highest international verification standards, like Gold Standard and VCS.
Uni is an active participant in the UN Climate Neutral Now Initiative, which supports organizations in acting now to achieve a climate neutral world by 2050, as enshrined in the Paris Agreement. We are also a signatory to the UN Climate Neutral Now Pledge, through which we have committed to measuring, reducing, compensating for, and reporting on our emissions annually.
We have completed our 2020 Organizational Carbon Footprint. Because 2020 was our first year in business, we did not include the LCA of our product as we were pre-production. The 2021 Organizational Carbon Footprint will include Scope 3 emissions related to product manufacturing. A full LCA study will also be undertaken after all sourcing, production, and packaging decisions have been finalized.
